January Track & Sand

January 9, 2017

Happy 2017! We are over a week into the new year. The holidays seem like so long ago; the decorations have been taken down and stowed away for another 11 months. The new year brings some new challenges for the track club. Two of our elected officers started their term. Be sure to welcome Mike Million and Mike O'Brien as they take over duties of vice president and treasurer (respectfully). Chris Kinne and Ken Wolfe stepped down after serving in those positions for over two years. Be sure to thank them for all their work. They will still be helping out at as many races as possible.

Our January board meeting will be this Wednesday (1/11) at Rick's Crab Trap starting at 6:00 p.m. We will hold our first Billy Bowlegs 5K planning meeting (same date/location as board meeting) starting at 5:30 p.m. Yes, we are already planning for our June race. If you want to help, or just see what work goes into putting on all the races, please join us.

Speaking of races, our race calendar is pretty full. Jan 14 is Buns on the Run 5K in Bluewater Bay. Jan 21 is the Davidson Dash in Crestview. They offer a 5K and a 10K. The following week is the Frosty 5K at St Mary School in FWB. This is a Grand Prix event. The 4th of Feb is another Grand Prix race; Valentine's 8K in Destin. Remember, part of the Grand Prix is volunteering for our races. Contact the race director to offer your services. There are many opportunities to volunteer and still run the race. Keep checking our race calendar for updates and changes.

Finally, remember to stay safe on the roads. It is still dark early in the morning and early in the evening. Wear lights and reflectors. And as we found out last weekend, it can get cold here in Northwest Florida. Dress accordingly or plan a session of cross training at the gym.

I hope to see everyone out at the training runs and races.
